Random Athlete of the Day- Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn

All apart of Cleveland Indians’ owner Rachel Phelps’ plan to move the club to Miami, Rick Vaughn was brought in as a joke of a starting pitcher. When asked where he played the year before, Vaughn replied, “California Penal” when asked how he ended up there, he said, “Stole a car.” Yes, Rick Vaughn is an ex-con who was called to play while still in jail. Early in his career, Vaughn had big control issues, leading announcer Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) to call an inning he pitched by saying “Ball four. Ball eight. Ball twelve, and Vaughn has walked the bases loaded.” But boy could he throw! Vaughn constantly hit 98 and 99 on the radar gun, one time even getting a “WOW” reading on the gun.

Rick Vaughn showed up to training camp with a haircut only he could possibly have while riding on the back of a motorcycle and wearing a leather jacket with no sleeves. Vaughn’s look was completed when he added a pair of thick black-rimmed glasses. Of course there was always the entrance song, “Wild Thing” by The Troggs.

Vaughn was an integral part of both of the Indians’ back-to-back division titles, even though he had a terrible second season and became a corporate sellout before coming up big with a strikeout of Jack Parkman for the final out sending the Indians to the World Series.
