NHL Preseason Excitement

Generally, all forms of preseason action are pretty boring, unless of  course you’re watching Hard Knocks. Apparently the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t get this memo, as Sunday night’s preseason affair was played with the intensity of a rivalry playoff game.

In the third period with the game in hand, things escalated quickly as Buffalo’s enforcer, John Scott (6’8, 270 pounds), went after Toronto’s best player, Phil Kessel (6’0, 203 pounds), off of a faceoff.

This resulted in all 12 men on the ice (including the goalies) engaging in a fight, as well as Maple Leaf David Clarkson joining the brawl off of the bench.

Several players will be suspended from the incident, and it is unfortunate that two teams with playoff aspirations will face early challenges in the regular season due to an escalation in the preseason. Nonetheless, two of the most important traits for a hockey team are toughness and sacrifice, and both teams displayed that.

The Sabres and Maple Leafs next square off back-to-back nights on November 15th and 16th. Expect fists to fly and retaliations to be had, as there will be bad blood between the division rivals throughout the year.
